As the date draws near for Yr13 to leave school and take their A Level exams, the focus reverts to Yr 12 and the start of the UCAS process. At my school over 95% of students leave to go to University and I am working hard to promote the incredible opportunities that Higher & Degree apprenticeships offer as an alternative route into employment, least of all a debt free journey to having a degree!
The start of educating our students is always to provide information in an accessible way. Perhaps one of the easiest, quickest and cheapest is to create a visual display that may answer their first questions of what apprenticeships are, which sectors are they in, which companies offer them and how do they find out more. Whilst I have been promoting apprenticeships for over 4 years now, this is something I have created for the first time this year, together with a “Wall of Fame” to include our own Alumni who have followed this path, some of whom have already graduated too. Our Alumni are truly inspirational especially for those who may not have thought that apprenticeships were for them and they have included their own top tips on applying for apprenticeships.
My next step will be to design apprenticeships lessons which can run along our UCAS lessons, for June, before our students attend a UCAS Convention at the University of Bedfordshire.
